Friday, December twenty-first will mark my first club show with the Bleedin’ Hearts in one year. Over that year I have been focusing a lot on projects like Big Sky Trio, The Hellroaring, double bass, writing new material, teaching, gigging, and, oh yeah, being a dad. In my world that means that my personal project has to be put on the back burner—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
It’s been a good time to reflect and see just what it is that I want to accomplish when I get onto a stage with my band. I still don’t have the perfect direction, but I am already seeing how that time off is helping to mold the set I am writing for the upcoming show. I remember coming out with Parker Brown and the Bleeding Hearts and wanting to be the biggest and the best band around—kind of the Tedeschi Trucks band of Montana—and in the whirl wind of it all, I feel like I lost focus on how I wanted the music to sound. That should have been paramount and it was elusive to me. With this band It’s easy for us to go out there and use our chops, talents, and charm to wow a crowd, but I needed a break to make sure I can have a thoughtful integrity to the music. As the show has been approaching, I have also been thinking and talking a lot with fellow artist, Tyler Murphy, about how to connect with the audience/people in a deeper and more meaningful way. It all can sound a little fluffy, I know that, but I feel like I am scratching the surface on something really fantastic lately and I hope it manifests itself at this show.
So I’ve stripped the big band down to the original trio of Erik Olson on bass/organ and keyboards; Keller Paulson on drums, and me playing guitar and singing.
There will be some new guest joining Keller, Erik, and I on the twenty-first as well as sets from Something Withcy and The Dead Presleys. I hope you will be there to join us as well and be a part of this music.
